limited resources and research conclusions (based on majority decision
of the panel). This year, the place of high dose therapy requiring
stem cell support (autologous or allogenic) in the management of cancer
in resource poor countries will be discussed. The discussion will
address several questions including 1. In which diseases and clinical
situations is such therapy superior or a reasonable alternative to
other treatment approaches? 2. How much of a therapeutic advantage
is associated with high dose therapy in these situations? 3. What
is the relative financial and toxic (including late effect) cost?
4. What factors, medical, socioeconomic and pragamatic need to be taken
into consideration in deciding whether to establish a facility for
high dose therapy, an the local indications for such therapy?

| A new element of the Annual Meeting is INCTR multidisciplinary
conferences. Such conferences are a standard feature of patient management
in major cancer centers, in which multidisciplinary teams discuss
optimal management of a particular patient for whom multimodality
treatment or alternative modalities of treatment are options. The
pros and cons of various approaches are discussed by experts. For
patients, they ensure that all relevant specialists have participated
in the final decision, and for staff, they provide an opportunity
to exchange views, and attempt to develop a consensus on optimal treatment.
For more junior members they provide an educational experience. |
