INCTR's Annual Meeting 2005 was held from December 10th - 13th in Chennai, India at the Park Sheraton Hotel & Towers and hosted by the Cancer Institute (WIA). Approximately 300 participants from 37 countries attended the meeting. The program for the first day included the INCTR Award Lectures, the President's Annual Report, Program Reports and a Proffered Papers session with oral presentations of selected abstracts. Days two through four began with a new feature of the Annual Meeting, "Meet the Expert" sessions. Following these sessions, participants convened together for key note lectures. This year Professor Harald zur Hausen, Emeritus Chairman of the Heidelberg Center for Cancer Research spoke on "Infections Causing Human Cancers", Dr V. Shanta, Chairman of the Cancer Institute (WIA), Chennai spoke on "Cancer Control in India 1955 - 2005", Dr Joe Harford, Director of the National Cancer Institute Office of International Affairs, spoke on "The Promise of Nanotechnology in Cancer Treatment" and Dr N.K. Ganguly, Secretary General of the Indian Council for Medical Research, spoke on "Health and Education Priorities in India".
Scientific and educational sessions on cervical cancer, palliative care, pediatric solid tumors and oral cancer were held on the second day. Two simultaneous workshops - Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia in Developing Countries and Breast Cancer in Developing Countries were held on the third day. These two workshops were followed by two simultaneous consensus panel discussions - Feasibility and Cost as Factors in Treatment Design for ALL in Developing Countries and Hereditary Breast Cancer in Developing Countries. The last day included two sessions - one devoted to emerging technologies and the other to palliative care. A multi-disciplinary conference on the "Treatment of Diffuse Large B Cell Lymphoma" was held. On the final day of the meeting, awards were presented for the best poster in pediatric oncology and in adult oncology.
