The INCTR organizes and participates in workshops and symposia for health care professionals involved in the care of patients with cancer. Workshops and symposia held in 2005 are listed below. For a summary of workshops and symposia held in 2003 and 2004, click here.
Workshops
Research Methodology Workshop (part of the Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital and Research Centre Annual Meeting), Lahore, Pakistan, March 13, 2005.
The workshop was entitled, "What you Always Wanted to Know, but Were Afraid to Ask" and covered all aspects of clinical research with an emphasis on practical advice for doctors-in-training.
Recent Advances in Cancer Nursing, Cesme, Turkey, April 11-13th, 2005.
In collaboration with the School of Nursing, Dokuz Eylul University in Izmir, Turkey, the Middle East Cancer Consortium (MECC), AMCC, INCTR's UK Office held a workshop for nurses from Turkey, Israel, Palestine, Egypt, Jordan and the Republic of Cyprus on recent advances in cancer nursing. Many topics were presented and discussed including management of the patient undergoing chemotherapy, quality of life, supportive care, including pain control and nutritional support, psychological and social aspects, and the development of cancer nursing care protocols.
Workshop on Malignant Lymphomas, Cesme, Turkey, April 11-13th, 2005.
This three-day workshop on laboratory methodologies and recent developments in lymphoma treatment was a collaborative effort of INCTR's UK Office, the Dokuz Eylul University in Izmir, Turkey, and MECC.
Issues in Cancer Clinical Trials (part of the International Chemotherapy Congress), Manila, Philippines, June 4, 2005.
In this session, the importance and obstacles to conducting clinical trials in low resource settings and the ethical issues in clinical research in developing countries were presented.
Basic Data Management (part of the International Chemotherapy Congress), Manila, Philippines, June 4-6th, 2005.
The workshop took place over the course of 3 afternoons and the topics presented and discussed were personnel and methods in data collection, documents and data quality assurance.
Palliative Care Educational Workshop, Ocean Road Cancer Institute, Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, June 15 - 16th, 2005
The Ocean Road Cancer Institute (ORCI), home to INCTR's Tanzania Office hosted an educational palliative care workshop in collaboration with the INCTR Palliative Care Team. Over 40 participants representing various NGOs and health disciplines from the region attended the workshop. The goal of the workshop was to provide education and culturally relevant training in pain and symptom management.
Morning Seminar for Nurses, ORCI, Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, June 17th, 2005.
Sabine Perrier-Bonnet representing AMCC and Virginia LeBaron of the Palliative Care Team gave a seminar for nurses about the safe preparation and administration of chemotherapy, basic management of side effects, and primary cancer prevention. The seminar was attended by 25 nurses and one physician.
First International Conference on Pediatric Oncology, Karachi, Pakistan, July 8 - 10th, 2005.
The First International Conference on Pediatric Oncology held in Karachi, Pakistan was a collaborative effort between INCTR and Pakistani oncologists. The program was a comprehensive review of pediatric oncology. One session included in the workshop was devoted to Palliative and Supportive Care. Two pre-conference workshops were also held - one devoted to Oncology Nursing and the other to Research Methodology and Medical Ethics.
Prevention and Early Diagnosis of Breast and Cervical Cancer, Niamey,Niger, Oct 5-11th, 2005
Organized by AMCC in collaboration with UICC, a training course with the central theme of prevention and early diagnosis of breast cancer and cervical cancer for health staff was held. Seventy-five participants including surgeons, doctors, midwives and cancer association members attended this course in order to learn how to organize care for cancer with women.
5th International Conference Cancer in Africa: A Call to Action: Palliative Care Training for Nurses (part of the African Organization for Research and Training in Cancer (AORTIC) Meeting, November 15-17th, Dakar, Senegal
A two day vocational training was offered to African nurses on palliative care during the AORTIC meeting. The training was focused on pain management and palliative care for cancer. There were two workshops set up one in French for francophone nurses and one in English for the Anglophone nurses. Sabine Perrier-Bonnet of AMCC participated in the organization of the content and the training.
Data Manager Training Course, Brussels, Belgium, November 7 - 10th, 2005
This course was a focused workshop for the data managers who are members of the research team involved in the study entitled, "The Characterization and Treatment of Burkitt's Lymphoma in Africa". Topics included an overview of basic data management with practical experience in data management.
