BIOGRAPHY
Louis Denis, MD
Louis Denis became Director of the Oncology Centre Antwerp in Antwerp, Belgium in February, 998 after a long career as an academic urologist, specialized in urological oncology. After finishing his training as an urologist at the Medical College of Virginia in 1964, he joined the Urological Department of the Antwerp City Hospitals. He became the Coordinating Chairman in 1973. He joined the faculty of the Antwerp University in 1974 and the faculty of the Vrije Universiteit Brussel as Professor of Urology in 1978.
He introduced transrectal ultrasonography in Europe in 1976 and became active in new drug development and clinical research studies in urological oncology. He served as President or Board Member of a number of national and international urological organizations. He served as Visiting Professor in Urology to a number of universities worldwide, became an Honorary Member of six urological associations, including the American and Japanese Urological Associations, received a number of scientific prizes and served on the Editorial Board of a dozen urological and oncological journals. He was the first managing editor of the European Journal of Cacner and organized its structure and concept. He is author or co-author of 40 books, more than 300 publications in scientific journals, and a number of audio-visual contributions to urological and oncological sciences.
His career as a urological oncologist started as a founding member of the Urological Group of the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC). He served the EORTC in a number of functions, including President from 1988 to 1991. In this capacity, he supervised the reorganization of the EORTC Central Office into its new headquarters with a 70 million BEF grant from the Belgian government. Afterwards, he served as Chair of the Education & Training Division in line with his Chair of the Flemish Advisory Council for Cancer Prevention from 1983 until 1997. He has held several positions in the European School of Oncology and the European Institute of Oncology. He also served as officer of the European Society of Surgical Oncology and the Federation of European Cancer Societies. Currently, he serves as treasurer and acting Secretary-General of the International Union Against Cancer (UICC), as treasurer of the International Consultation of Urological Diseases, and as chairman of the International Prostate Health Council. His recent tasks included the chairmanship of the Fourth International World Health Organization Consultation on Benign Prostatic Hypertrophy in 1997 and the Second UICC Cancer Management Meeting in Antwerp in 1997.
