BIOGRAPHY
Ian T Magrath, MB, BS, FRCP, FRCPath

    Ian Magrath, President of the International Network for Cancer Treatment and Research, is highly regarded as a leading international expert in the treatment of non-Hodgkin's lymphomas (NHL) and in the treatment of pediatric cancers. He was the Chief of the Lymphoma Biology Section of the Pediatric Oncology Branch of the National Cancer Institute (NCI). He was responsible for clinical and laboratory research activities in aggressive lymphomas in children and young adults. During the last 18 years, he has established a program to improve treatment for patients with cancer in developing countries through the conduct of both clinical trials and basic research.

    Through this work, he has developed a large network of collaborators in many parts of the developing world, including India, Pakistan, China, Mexico, Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Turkey, Uganda and Egypt. He has served as the Project Officer for Indo-US and US AID Projects in collaborative programs with India, Pakistan and Egypt. One of the major achievements of these programs has been a doubling of the survival rates in children with acute lymphoblastic leukemia and NHL. Prior to joining the NCI, he served as the Director of the Lymphoma Treatment Center in Kampala, Uganda. In addition to his responsibilities to the INCTR, he also is a Senior Investigator at the NCI and is a Professor of Pediatrics at the University of the Uniformed Services in the Health Sciences in Bethesda, Maryland.

    Dr Magrath has authored over 300 articles and texts relating to the pathogenesis and treatment of malignant lymphomas, pediatric cancers, cancer in developing countries and Epstein Barr Virus. He has edited a number of books including a major text entitled "The Non-Hodgkin's Lymphomas". He serves on the Editorial Boards of many international cancer journals including the International Journal of Oncology, the International Journal of Pediatric Hematology Oncology, Cancer Strategy and Leukemia. He has received numerous awards and honors including The Khanolkar Award, the Cairo University Shield, Bhoruka Award and a recognition award from the Arab American Cancer Foundation.

    He is listed on the Honor Roll of the International Union Against Cancer (UICC). He chairs the UICC Committee on Future Prospects for Cancer Treatment. He is a member of numerous professional societies including the American Society of Clinical Oncology, the American Society of Hematology, the American Association of Cancer Research, the International Society of Pediatric Oncology (SIOP) and is a member of the SIOP committee for Pediatric Oncology in Developing Countries. He received his qualifications in medicine and surgery from the University of London. He is a fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and of the Royal College of Pathologists.
