BIOGRAPHY
Dennis Wright
Dennis Wright qualified as a medical practitioner (BSc.MB.ChB) from the University of Bristol in 1956. Following internship, he became a registered medical practitioner in 1957. That year he started training in pathology. From 1960 to 1968 he worked at Makerere University, Uganda as a Lecturer, Senior Lecturer, and finally Reader in Pathology. During this time, he did pioneering work in Burkitt’s lymphoma with Dr Denis Burkitt and developed his lifelong interest in lymphomas. He wrote his MD thesis on Burkitt’s lymphoma and also became a member of the Royal College of Pathologists. He left Uganda to become Reader in Pathology at the University of Birmingham. In 1972, he was appointed to the Foundation Chair of Pathology at the University of Southampton. He retired from this Chair in 1996, but remains active in teaching, research and diagnosis.
He is past President of the British Lymphoma Pathology Group and of the European Association of Haematopathologists and a member of the World Health Organization Clinical Advisory Committee on the Classification of Haematological Malignancies. Professor Wright was Editor-in-Chief of The Journal of Pathology for 15 years. In 1973, he was awarded the Paul-Ehrlich Ludwig-Darmstadter Prize for his work on the pathology of Burkitt’s lymphoma. He is well known for his research in lymphoid neoplasia and has made important contributions in the identification of mucosal associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) and intestinal lymphomas.
