Cancer Registry

INCTR’s Cancer Registry Program was established in 2010.

The goals of the program are:

  • To provide technical support in cancer registration and to provide scientific support to low and middle income countries (LMIC)
  • To provide training in population-based cancer registration and the use of data entered in these registries
  • To advocate the cause of cancer registration within regions and to facilitate the establishment of associations and networks of cancer registries
  • To coordinate international research projects and to disseminate findings

On-going Projects

The African Cancer Registry Network (AFCRN)

AFCRN was formally inaugurated in March 2012 and it expanded upon the activities of the East African Cancer Registry Network that was established earlier.  AFCRN aims to improve the effectiveness of cancer surveillance in sub-Saharan Africa by providing expert evaluation of current problems and technical support to remedy identified barriers, with long-term goals of strengthening health systems and creating research platforms for the identification of problems, priorities, and targets for intervention.  The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), in the framework context of its “Global Initiative for Cancer Registration in Low-and Middle-Income Countries” has partnered with AFCRN to provide a Regional Hub for cancer registration in sub-Saharan Africa.  At the present time, there are 29 population-based cancer registries representing 22 countries that are members of AFCRN.
