PROGRAMS
INCTR conducts research in collaboration with institutions in developing countries. The initial emphasis is on potentially curable cancers, hematological malignancies (leukemias and lymphomas), cancers occurring in women and children, and cancers associated with infectious diseases, which are more frequent in developing countries.
Educational activities frequently relate to specific clinical or translational research projects, but also include meetings, courses, expert visits to host institutions in developing countries, and sponsored training or elective fellowships in institutions in developing countries designated as INCTR Training Centers.
Because so many cancer patients in developing countries present in the late stages of their disease, sometimes the only treatment option available to doctors is to make their patients as comfortable as possible. With this in mind, INCTR established a Palliative Care program to assist developing countries to initiate and sustain effective palliative care schemes suitable for their countries.
INCTR, consistent with its mission, includes infrastructure development as a component of all of its programs. It seeks to promote collaboration among institutions and organizations in more affluent countries to bring resources, including professional expertise to bear on cancer control in developing countries. In order to improve the quality of care, INCTR fosters the development of cooperative groups within developing countries or regions. Cooperative groups undertake clinical studies of importance to the region that are directed towards improving the outcome of treatment.
